Extra Curriculars
IIT Roorkee has always shown its faith in the extra-curricular excellence of its students. From the institute website to the annual cultural fest, the institute delegates responsibility to its students wherever possible. With activities and competitions taking place every other day, students are provided with ample opportunities to develop their soft skills and thereby broaden their perspective. A few notable organizations and events are listed below.
Thomso
The annual cultural fest of IIT Roorkee has steadily grown into one of the largest youth festivals of the region. Its current status as the 'Official Youth Festival of Uttarakhand', bestowed on it by the Government of Uttarakhand, only ratifies the same. Every October, Thomso provides a platform for students from across the country to showcase their talent and vie for glory in a plethora of competitions. Additionally, the event is graced by some of the biggest names in the world of entertainment. With over 4 months going into its organization, Thomso provides the students of IITR an opportunity to interact with celebtiries and corporate persons and thereby hone their creative and maangerial skills.
Cognizance
Though younger than most of its counterparts, Cognizance has improved in leaps and bounds to become one of the biggest technical events of the country. The last edition attracted participants from 350 institutes from across the country, thus making it the second largest technical fest in Asia. Aimed at providing a platform for showcasing the best and the latest innovations in the world of technology, the event also boasts of a plethora of lectures by some of the biggest names in the field. Entirely managed by students, Cognizance provides opportunities for the aspiring scientists and managers alike.
Geek Gazette, Watch Out and Kshitij
The IIT-R student community is unique, with the presence of three completely student-run magazines on campus. The financing, designing, printing and distribution of the magazines is completely handled by the students, moulding them into dynamic professionals.
Geek Gazette, the institute technical magazine, Kshitij, the institute literary magazine and Watch Out, the campus news magazine are three of the most active and popular student groups in the institute, both bringing out two issues per semester. The institute also brings out its own magazine, the Lion, which has contributions from both the faculty and students.
Entrepreneurship Development Cell
The Entrepreneurship Development Cell of IIT-Roorkee , commonly known as EDC, has been established with the objective of creating, fostering and promoting the spirit of entrepreneurship among the youth of the nation. In pursuance of its goals, the cell has set up both short and long-term objectives. The short term objectives aim at bolstering an environment conducive for entrepreneurial thinking and action through the organization of a variety of entrepreneurship-oriented events such as business plan contests, case studies, business quizzes, social entrepreneurship issues' solutions and so forth. The long term objectives aim at setting up an incubator at IIT-Roorkee for aiding students who have a marketable idea or project and aspire to start their own ventures.
Inter IIT Sports Meet
IITR sports support various recreational, training and competitive activities, round the year, in various sports and games. But an ultimate honour for any IITR sports person is a chance to represent the institute at the Inter IIT Sports Meet, held annually in October/ December. Every year one of the IITs host an inter IIT Sports event in which their best athletes competes against one another in various sports for the coveted Inter IIT Trophy.
CLUBS
The competitive academic environment and co-curricular activities on campus keep the students on their toes. But everyone needs some time off, to relax and recharge . Clubs at IIT-R are the best place for this. The students' clubs: the Hobbies club, the U.G. club, the P.G. club, the Alaknanda club and the Jawahar club house the indoor sports facilities including seven Billiards & Snooker Tables, Carrom boards, Chess boards, Table Tennis facilities and a Foosball table. The hobbies club also has sections devoted to pursuits like star-gazing, philately and numismatics, and robotics. The clubs also have reading rooms with a plethora of newspapers and light magazines. Each of the clubs have a TV room with a seating capacity of a hundred-odd people providing a great atmosphere for watching the winning sixer or the not-so-interesting soap operas.
Cultural Activities
Student life in IIT Roorkee is far more colourful than in most other places, and one of the main reasons for the same is the Cultural Council. Subdivided into the Dramatics, Audio, Programme Management, Music, Choreography & Dance, Literary and Lights Sections, the Council is very active and organizes events every weekend, thereby providing students with an opportunity to showcase their talent and doubling up as a source of entertainment for professors and students alike.
