The name Department of Earthquake Engineering as given in 1969 to the School of Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering (SRTEE) which was established in 1961. It is the only Institute of its kind in India and amongst a few in the world. The Department has been actively engaged in teaching and training, research, development and consultancy work in four major fields of Structural Dynamics, Soil Dynamics, Seismology and Seismotectonics and Instrumentation. It has contributed very significantly in the field of Earthquake Disaster Mitigation for the last 40 years. The department has made significant contributions both at national as well as international level in the area of Earthquake Engineering and Earthquake Disaster Mitigation. Some of the most important contributions are (i) drawing seismic zoning map of the country, (ii) development of Codal Provisions on Earthquake Resistant Design and Construction Practices, (iii) manual on earthquake resistant non-engineered construction which is usually employed for common man housing, (iv) specifying seismic parameters and earthquake resistant analysis and design of major structures in the country, (v) established a National Network of Strong Motion Instruments in the country for recording strong motion earthquakes which provides vital data for understanding ground motion characteristics for seismic design of structures, (vi) generated human resource in Earthquake Engineering through its Undergraduate, Post Graduate teaching; (vi) developed major testing facilities such as Shake and Shock tables for seismic qualification studies, quasi static testing lab and soil dynamic lab; (vii) perusing research activities; (viii) providing technical know-how related to Earthquake Engineering and disseminating it through holding Symposia/ Workshop, Special lectures and short-term technical courses; and Earthquake Disaster Mitigation through consultancy services. Department is currently engaged in several important studies such as Seismic Microzonation of Mega Cities, Seismic Hazard and Risk, System Identification of Structures, Earthquake Response Analysis, Seismic evaluation and vulnerability assessment; and seismic retrofitting of structures, Structure Response Control, Seismic base isolation of buildings, Inelastic Seismic Design and Innovative Structural.
